I currently manage the following projects
the (New) Hoorn Cohorts, which is are two population-based cohorts on the development of diabetes in the general population (start date 1989 and 2006), including a Morbidity and Mortality Registration, a bio bank and 6 fte of research nurses, support staff and PhD students.
The Diabetes Pearl of the String of Pearls Initiative, which is a joint investigation of all University Medical Centers in the Netherlands, aimed at creating a national biobank in which clinical data and biomaterials of diabetes patients from all participating institutes are included. I am currently the national diabetes pearl manager.
The DIabetes REsearCh on patient straTification (DIRECT) study , location Amsterdam. The DIRECT study is part of a EU FP7 Innovative Medicines Initiative project, a joint undertaking between four industry and 21 academic partners throughout Europe. The Consortium aims to discover and validate biomarkers that:(1) predict the rate of glycaemic deterioration before and after type 2 diabetes onset; (2) predict the response to diabetes therapies; (3) help stratify type 2 diabetes into clearly definable disease subclasses that can be treated more effectively than without stratification.
The Proteomic prediction and Renin angiotensin aldosterone system Inhibition prevention Of early diabetic nephRopathy In TYpe 2 diabetic patients with normoalbuminuria (Priority) study is a EU FP7 project, with academic partners throughout Europe. PRIORITY is a prospective multicenter study of normoalbuminuric type 2 DM patients that the urinary proteome test identifies patients with a high risk for development of microalbuminuria. To demonstrate the clinical utility of the test by showing that aldosterone blockade in high-risk patients can reduce progression to microalbuminuria in comparison to placebo, on the top of standard treatment in a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled multicenter study.
